Daily Itinerary
After an early morning departure from Marrakech, drive into the High Atlas Mountains to the trekking hub of Imlil (1,740m). Meet your mountain guide and mule team. Enjoy a traditional lunch before embarking on a 3-hour acclimatization hike to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Overnight in a traditional mountain gîte.
Begin a challenging 6-hour trek ascending to the Tizi Mzik pass (2,400m), rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Toubkal and the surrounding valleys. Descend steeply into the lush, isolated Ait Bouguemez Valley. Your cook will have a hot lunch waiting. Overnight in a village guesthouse.
Dedicate the day to a moderate 5-hour trek deep into the heart of the "Happy Valley." Walk through ancient juniper forests, cross irrigation canals, and visit remote Amazigh villages built from red clay. Learn about traditional mountain agriculture and enjoy a picnic lunch by the river. Overnight in the same guesthouse.
Morning at leisure to explore the local market or rest. After breakfast, transfer via 4x4 vehicle (approx. 4 hours) to the dramatic Todra Gorge. In the late afternoon, embark on a 2-hour guided hike through the narrowest part of the canyon, where 300-meter limestone walls block out the sun. Overnight in a hotel at the gorge's edge.
Enjoy a final morning walk along the river in Todra before driving west to the Dades Valley. Stop at the "Monkey Fingers" rock formations for a short, scenic hike. Arrive in the Dades Valley and explore the ancient kasbahs and rose plantations (if in season). Overnight in a boutique kasbah hotel.
Drive south through the rugged, pre-Saharan landscapes, stopping at the stunning viewpoint of the Jorf Gorge. Arrive in Merzouga as the afternoon heat breaks. Swap your vehicle for a camel caravan and trek 1.5 hours into the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes. Arrive at your luxury desert camp for a traditional dinner and Gnawa drumming under the stars. Overnight in a desert camp.
Wake up for an optional sunrise hike to the top of the dunes. After breakfast, embark on a 4x4 desert expedition to the remote fringes of the Sahara. Visit the black nomadic families of Khamlia, learn about their traditional desert survival skills, and enjoy mint tea in a nomad tent. Overnight in a desert hotel.
Leave the deep desert behind and drive north to the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river and an ancient caravan route lined with millions of palm trees. In the afternoon, embark on a 3-hour guided trek through the quiet, shaded paths of the palm groves, passing ancient earthen granaries and traditional mud-brick villages. Overnight in a guesthouse in Agdz.
Morning drive to Ouarzazate. Stop at the UNESCO-listed earthen fortress of Ait Benhaddou for a guided 2-hour hike up and over the kasbah, offering spectacular views of the valley. Arrive in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. Enjoy a farewell dinner featuring a slow-cooked traditional tagine. Overnight in a kasbah hotel.
After breakfast, begin the scenic drive back to Marrakech, crossing the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). Arrive in Marrakech by early afternoon. Your expedition concludes with a transfer to your hotel or the airport, carrying the profound memories of the mountains and the desert.
Frequently Asked Questions
General
No, you do not need technical climbing skills or ropes. However, this is graded "Challenging" because you will be hiking 6 to 15 kilometers a day over steep, uneven, and sometimes rocky terrain at altitudes up to 2,400 meters. You should have a solid baseline of cardiovascular fitness and be accustomed to multi-day hiking.
Absolutely not! A major highlight of trekking in Morocco is the mule support. Our muleteers will carry all the heavy luggage, food, and cooking equipment. You only need to carry a small daypack (approx. 5-7 kg) with your water, camera, sunscreen, and a light jacket.
The mountain gîtes in the High Atlas are basic but clean and authentic. They offer private or shared twin rooms with real beds and warm blankets. Most gîtes have basic cold-water sinks, and some have solar-heated showers (usually for a small fee of $2-$3). The luxury desert camp in Merzouga, however, has proper en-suite facilities and hot water.
Our trekking cooks are renowned for their ability to create incredible, hot, multi-course meals in the middle of the wilderness. You will enjoy fresh baked bread, hearty vegetable soups, traditional tagines, couscous, fresh fruit, and plenty of mint tea. We can easily accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets if notified in advance.
The camel trek is a gentle, 1.5-hour ride into the dunes and is very safe. The camels are well-trained, and the handlers walk beside you to assist. If you prefer not to ride a camel, you can walk alongside the caravan or arrange a 4x4 transfer directly to the desert camp.
Your guide is certified in wilderness first aid and carries a comprehensive medical kit and an emergency communication satellite phone or local SIM. In the rare event of a serious emergency, our mule teams can rapidly evacuate you to the nearest road for 4x4 transport to a hospital in Ouarzazate or Marrakech.
